Whirlwind Day in the Windy City

Shoenthaler Collection

IMG_1472In Downers Grove, Illinois is an extraordinary private collection of Ed and Judy Schoenthaler, who operate a suburban Chevrolet dealership.  All the cars are driveable and are routinely shown in concours events.  All are housed in a discreet building in a light industrial park.

Ed and Judy showed us all around, and shared not only their car collection, but their vast collection of auto memorabilia and model trains.  See the photos and especially the model trains in motion in the video below.

Driehaus Mansion Museum

IMG_1497Steps away from Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, the Driehaus Museum offers visitors a fascinating view of one of the few remaining examples of the palatial homes erected by the wealthy of America’s Gilded Age.

The galleries, elegantly furnished with period pieces selected from the Driehaus Collection, are presented in harmony with the interiors and surviving furnishings, immersing visitors in the original splendor of this late 19th-century home.

In the Fog at the Top of the World

We had lunch on the 95th floor of the Hancock Tower…  It was a cloudy, overcast day, however, and the view was nothing but fog!  We joked that we could have been 100 feet underground with a movie fog projected around the windows!

Reconnecting with Old Friends

ronandcharlieCharlie Poudrier and Ron Lippert are old friends I met when I lived in Rowayton CT over 32 years ago.  They live in Chicago and built a business providing stone interiors to yacht builders.  We kept in touch, but had not actually seen each other for about 30 years.  It was great to spend an afternoon to catch up!

Greek!

We had a sampling of Greek food at the world-famous Greek Island restaurant!

  1. That was quite a train collection. Loved the amusement park and how the trains traversed around and through it.

  2. Fantastic model train display. The Pat Halpin display here in San Antonio is on a par and worth seeing but not generally open to the general public. Pat is CEO of the Texas Transportation Museum on wetmore rd above the airport where we have a 100 foot long HO gauge layout and others. Pat was my guest at the recent Hyatt Regency to see the cars on Judgment day and and recently visited RROC hq in Mecanicsburg PA.
