Mountain Carvings

In my first day as a “rider” I hitched with Dave Johnson in his 1938 Packard Darrin convertible.   We toured to Mount Rushmore and then to the Crazy Horse Memorial — both monuments to man’s desire to carve a lasting impression into the earth.

Mount Rushmore

IMG_1539At only 6 stories high, the faces of Mount Rushmore are smaller than I expected, but still impressive.  Our park service has created a nice facility to move and feed a lot of visitors, and give everyone plenty of opportunities for photos.

The sculptors, Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln, used a clever device to transfer the pattern from the 6-foot studio models to the 60-foot granite surface: A fixed pivot point was mounted on the head of each with a horizontal measuring rod rotating from the pivot.  A pointed weight hung from a string a certain distance on the rod from the pivot point.  For every surface point on the studio model, there was an angle of rotation, a length of the string, and a distance of the string from the pivot point.  These three measurements were simply multiplied by 10 and translated to the mountain granite to determine depth of dynamite, surface removal by jack hammers, and surface smoothing by air tools!  Simple genius!

Crazy Horse

IMG_1024When done, the Crazy Horse monument will dwarf Mount Rushmore and serve as an educational and cultural center of the American Indian.  In the photo here, note that I am standing in front of the scale model; behind me in the distance is the mountain carving as it stands today.

With only the face of Crazy Horse complete at this time, the creation of this monument continues daily.  The good news is that all development is done with private funds — no government funding.  So I was happy to pay an admission fee.

Mini Show

We had dinner downtown in front of the Delmonico Grill… Knowing we were coming, the city closed off street parking and allowed us to line up for a mini car show for the nice people of Rapid City!  See the photos!

  1. Sorry to read of the breakdown but felt you were on borrowed time with the water pump from the start despite competent field repairs. Good decision to send the car home before encountering RRREALY
