Starting on Restoration

I am catching up on posts regarding the restoration of the 1932 Cadillac…  All posts are post-dated from when the project started in June 2013…

When we last saw our 1932 Cadillac, it had started smoking badly (under the hood and into the passenger compartment) about 16 miles out of Rapid City, South Dakota.

To recap my earlier post:

My 1932 Cadillac had been thirstier than usual the last couple days, drinking a couple of gallons of water and a couple quarts of oil each day.  By the time we got to within 16 miles of Rapid City, the car told me it had had enough.

After 2500 miles on this trip (and 102,000 miles total) the piston rings had worn too much and the burning oil fumes from the crankcase were coming in through the firewall for us to breathe in the passenger compartment.  Also, the water pump was making loud noises to indicate it was not tolerating my earlier field repairs.  In consult with mechanic Pete via cell phone, we determined that everything worn was fixable, but to continue risked real damage to the engine.

The Howard Johnson’s Motel management VERY nicely agreed to let it sit in their parking lot awaiting pickup by Passport Transport and shipping back to Houston.

Little did I understand that the economy shipping I had contracted for really did mean that they would pick up my car at THEIR convenience and deliver it to Houston when they could.  It took until mid-June 2013 to pick it up.  In the meantime, there was a little hail storm in Rapid City; nothing too bad, but the hail did break one of the side mirrors.

Once on the road, it took a couple of weeks to get back to Houston and arrive at Pete’s shop.
