Spanning the Hudson

The first full day of the CCCA ReDiscover America Tour included wonderful and memorable stops on both sides of — and IN — the Hudson River!

Mann Collection

IMG_1158Sam and Emily Mann opened up their private grounds and garages to share with us their world-class collection of fine cars.  The garage itself was an architectural masterpiece, appearing to be a simple two–level home nestled into the hillside of a quiet Englewood neighborhood.  Inside were dozens of world-class cars, each one of which had an incredible story and pedigree…  Clark Gables’ Duesenberg, several Delahayes, and my personal favorite — a deep burgundy Dual Ghia convertible!

(The family asked us not to post our pictures on the internet, so these have been removed from the “slide show” below.)

Marano Collection

IMG_1211Ralph and Adeline not only showed us their great collection, but also hosted us for lunch!  Most of the Marano’s collection is Packards, some of them housed in the original Durant factory.  Ralph has two prototype Packard Balboas and one of six Packard Pan Americans.

Little Italy

IMG_1231We experienced the thrills and joy of taking two 45-foot tour buses into Little Italy for dinner on a Saturday night!  I must confess that the drivers exhibited great skill to maneuver these behemoths through the streets of New York, but we did arrive about an hour late to our restaurant.  Still, the staff at Grotto Azzura managed to serve us all with little consternation and get us on our way to our next stop!

The Rock

IMG_1257We capped off our “Night on the Town” in New York with an elevator ride to the top of Rockefeller Center and its panoramic views of the entire city.  There was lots of activity on a Saturday night, and many of us were impressed by the numbers of different languages spoken by other visitors that evening — testament to the fact that America (even with its problems) continues to be the model of freedom in the world and the place to be for countless people from around the world.

  1. John,

I know the run is just getting underway, but if your adventures thus far are any indication of what lies ahead, you are in for one heck of a trip.

Have fun and we’ll hold the fort down for you until you return.

    David
