The 240 mile drive from Reno to the hotels in Yosemite Park included more up and down mountains than anyone had imagined.  The upward climbs and downhill braking were stressful for all the cars…  One driver even snapped his universal joint!

Lake Tahoe

The drive took us along the eastern Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, and we could take in the breathtaking views of the shimmering blue water. At a surface elevation of 6,225 feet, Tahoe is the largest Alpine Lake in North America.

Coming across the mountains toward Yosemite, we reached an elevation of almost 10,000 feet.  The air pressure was so low, in fact, that a bag of Cheetos in the car that had been manufactured at sea level had expanded to nearly bursting.  The drive was gorgeous, though!  See the video, below.

Ahwahnee Hotel

Some of us are staying at the Yosemite Lodge, which has a nice view of the falls.  Others are staying at the historic Ahwahnee Hotel, built in the 1920’s for the affluent traveler of the day.  The speakeasy on the second floor behind the panels in the dining room still exists, but is no longer used!  The hotel boasts a grand lobby and majestic dining room.  The hotel looks like it is made from wood and rock, but to minimize the effects of wildfires, the structures that appear to be wood are actually made from concrete poured into rough molds and painted to look like wood.

Yosemite

Our time there included a guided tour of Yosemite.  The tour guide was great and went out of her way to educateus all about the park, its history, and its place in nature and geologic time.  See the photos!
