The Magic of Design

The Architect

I stopped for lunch this day to visit my former brother-in-law Peter Chermayeff and his wife Andrea Petersen at their house in Andover, Massachusetts.  Peter is a noted architect, having designed many of the world’s great aquariums, and has a real eye for design.

Peter reinforced a notion that I have always held about the 1932 Cadillac…  that its design, its lines, its form, and its artistry is unmatched before or since.  The Cadillac of a year earlier had awkward rectangular windows that seemed out-of-place against the other smooth lines.  The Cadillac of a year later had early elements of streamlining which appeared to be after thoughts.  Only in 1932 did they get it “just right.”

We took the Cadillac over to Cranston to visit Sandy’s octogenarian father, who loved taking a ride in the car that is almost as old as he!

  1. A REAL Magician? Wow. I don’t think I have even known a real magician or someone that knows a real magician. Did he do any magic for you? Looks like the start of a great trip. Please keep those posts coming.

  2. I’m envious of your early wanderings. My family grew up on Boston’s north shore and we try to get back there every 2 or 3 years – ’tis beautiful in the spring or fall. Hope Pete will take kindly to your “on the fly” water pump repair and that you have very few others on your cross country trek.

  3. John,

We are really enjoying your pictures and stories. Have a wonderful time. The geography of the area looks beautiful and everyone seems thrilled to experience you and your fabulous Cadillac. Ken
