Lessons in Letting Go

IMG_0854Preparing for a five-week road trip has been an exercise in letting go of control — a trait that does not exactly run in my family.  I have found that “letting go” is really an exercise in “trusting others”.

I cannot possibly undertake an adventure like this on my own, so here are the folks I am trusting completely:

Pete

Pete is the wonderful Greek mechanic who takes care of all four of our cars, including the 1932 Cadillac.  Since the last road trip with this car, Pete has:

  • replaced the fabric top
  • replaced the clutch (that I broke)
  • rebuilt the transmission
  • repaired the brake booster (that I broke)
  • replaced the leaky water pump (14 times…long story)
  • replaced the mufflers
  • adjusted the valves and timing

He has done countless other tweaks and fixes to the Cadillac and taken as much care as if it were his own car and HE was driving across the country.

See the video below of the valves under adjustment and note the self-satisfied look on his face at the very last moment of the recording!

I put my trust in Pete.

Rex

Rex is the driver for Passport Transport who took my car the other day and will deliver it to my friend in New England later this week.  Rex needed little instruction on how to operate the car, he knew what he was doing and he loaded my car tight for shipping.  He is a real professional who handles nothing but collector cars.  He had nice things to say about the obvious attention Pete has put into the car.

His company even provides me a GPS link so I know where Rex and my car are every minute.  (It appears that Rex stopped at a race car facility and a classic car dealer in the last couple days, so I would guess my car now has other interesting cars to talk to.)

I put my trust in Rex.

Ray

Ray is the volunteer tour coordinator for the CCCA tour.  He has done this before.  I do not know how one can possibly arrange the details for 44 cars and all the associated people to travel en masse across the country.  We have to be fed, housed, entertained and (most likely) repaired.  All our cars are “special” so wherever we go some “special” accommodation is needed.

I have no real idea yet exactly where we are going or how we are going to get from point A to point B.  But I do know that Ray has it all planned out.

I put my trust in Ray.

Hooray for letting go!
